POST 7: I'VE WATCHED A NEW FILM

EXTINCTION!

The new film I watched, was called Extinction. This film is currently on Netflix which is how I accessed it. it is 1hr 35minutes long and is directed by Ben Young. It was also made 2018.

Have you ever heard of this film before?

I had never heard of this film before until my friend recommended the film to me. I read the description on Netflix and it sounded really action packed so I decided to watch it. 

What was the film about?

The main story is based around a normal Family of 4, the father, the mother and their two daughters. The main character is the father, who starts having these bad dreams/visions at night but also in the day time. However these visions where not just some bad dreams they were about a massive alien invasion. He started getting these visions everyday, and they started getting between him and his family and the people around him. As viewers we got to see these visions, which makes the audience understand the character more, and also makes us feel sorry for the father. He tried to spend time with his kids, however due to the dreams they ended up disrupting his plans and his two children felt like he didn't care anymore and keeps forgetting about them. He tried to explain to his wife about these nightmares but she said he isn't getting enough sleep and needs some help. 

One night when his family and friends come to visit him and his family, His nightmares become reality and everything starts to get uncontrollable. A extra-Terrestrial force destroys the earth, and him and his family going through a lot to try and protect themselves, whilst the father faces his worst nightmare. 

Towards the end, there is a major plot twist which basically reveals that this normal family we thought they were, are actually robots and the 'aliens' that they thought are aliens are actually humans who are trying to reclaim the planet back. Previously in the past the aliens and humans created a war between them which drove the humans off the planet and now they have come back to create another war.

what was good?

I love this film, I think the way they have presented the visions and nightmares to then turn into reality is a really exciting and innovative idea. The genre personally is really entertaining as I love action and adventure films. I thought the narrative structure is laid out really well and it flows smoothly. The ending sums up the whole film and it makes everything that happened in the film have more meaning. The visions they showed us, were very clear and you know exactly what is going on. I love the plot twist as it's so unexpecting which shocks the viewers. I think creating a film which isn't so predictable is what a real film is about. the dramatic effects/explosives and editing were amazing, it looked so real and clear, which really engages the audience. 

What was bad?

Personally, I felt like their wasn't much personality showing through the characters. The main character was the father so I felt like I knew him a lot, however at the beginning of the film it's focussed more on the relationships between the families, so it would be good to see more personality through the children and the wife especially. The film had quite a long intro however it puts the audience on edge as the middle and end are really overwhelming for the viewers.

Would you use any of these ideas for your short film?

I love films where they put the viewers on edge and make them feel apart of the film which is what this film made me feel. after watching this film I would love to incorporate action into my film and make the audience predict wrong as it engages them more and makes them talk about it and question what happened. 

would you recommend this film to anyone?

I would defiantly recommend this film to anyone who loves thrillers and action movies as well as Sci-fi. it's a really engaging film due to the twists in the film, even if you don't like this type of film I still think you love it as its not just about aliens its about the relationships between the characters as well. overall it's worth watching!
